December

Here's a few photos of Matt and I from December--I am 6+ mo prego here. The 1st one is from early Dec. in Vero and the 2nd one is from Christmas Eve, in South Carolina. Thanks to my sister for the cute purple maternity top that fits much better than the stretched out sweater!

Family Holidays 2006, Part Uno

Matt and I spent Thanksgiving with the Hays family in Kansas City this year. Because of school and flight prices,
we didn't get to fly in until Thursday morning. But we had 48 wonderful hours with Brad, Carrie, and the Parents--grandparents to be. Brad welcomed us into his apartment there in KC and Mom cooked up a spread of turkey and the works-- I felt like all we did was eat for hours on end. Somehow she allowed a break in the cooking for some good PeiWei Bistro/PF Chang's wannabe. We played games, of course, watched some lousy football, and enjoyed feeling the baby kick for the first times! At least I enjoyed sharing that with them! I'm so glad we got to all get together, even though the miles to be traveled seem to be multiplying the older we all get! Maybe one day soon we'll have a holiday in Florida...

Girl Fun

Here's me and baby boy at 5 months. Carrie came down to FL for a fun girls' weekend, and she took a few photos for me. We had a great weekend together, shopping, eating, and going to the Women Of Faith conference in Orlando.

The Bump is Growing!

Finally! Here are a few photos of the growing bump called my baby belly. They are basically like 3 months, 4 months, and 5 months, or close to.

It's A Boy!

So we're having a boy...
Hopefully accompanying this post are a few photos that the sonographer scanned for us at our most recent ultrasound appointment. If they don't post, -sorry-, they'll be on their way ASAP. We acknowledge they're not the clearest, but after like 20 min. of just trying to get a clear shot of his face, even the radiology tech seemed weary. Mom and Dad were about exhausted. The little tyke seems to be a fairly active fellow who (taking after his dad) doesn't care for picture taking all too much. He squirmed and wriggled and dug down into a safe spot in the corner of my hip. No problem with showing his tummy and butt, just the face remains a bit of a mystery. Too bad my public school insurance won't pay for the ultra snazzy 3-D ultrasound machine. Maybe next time. Our first real view of our baby was a wonderful experience. Things look and seem healthy. Can't wait to show you all the little video. Not that you'll be as fascinated with it as I am, but I know you'll pretend for me anyway.

"Final Destination"

Destination #3 for my June trip was Nashville, TN. My sister Carrie just accepted an RD job (resident director) there at Trevecca Nazarene University (yes, the school my husband attended). By God's amazing plan, she was able to plan her road trip from Idaho to Tennessee around the family reunion, and I was able to join her on the last leg of the trip. (Matt flew home from Kansas City to work.) Carrie drove the first leg by herself from Idaho to the parents house in Grand Junction--then mom and dad helped her drive from GJunx to Kansas--then she and I drove the final stretch to her new Music City home. We of course had a really good time being together, but driving the big u-haul (actually, it was a Penske) is really tough! Her car was on a trailor behind the truck, and there is an enormous blind spot that makes it very difficult to change lanes. Getting gas and pulling in and out of resteraunts is also a feat in and of itself. As you can see we managed to find some awesome trucker hats along the way to make us feel the part.
When we got to Nashville, we had some life-saving help at 10:00 p.m. (from Jonathon, Jessica and another RD Rebecca) moving her furniture and STUFF into her little apartment, and with in the next 3 days, somehow transformed the white little rooms into a "Jungle" of color and fun. It's kind of like Rainforest Cafe meets Asian Pacific...It looks even cooler now with all her art work up on the walls, but this is the most recent picture I took. I really have to give Carrie amazing props for making such a big move virtually by herself. I am so excited for the experiences she will have the next year or two at TNU, and of course, she's so much closer to us now!! We're already planning the trips...

The Hays/Hawkins PR Group

After we left the family reunion, the fun didn't stop JUST yet. Carrie and Brad and Matt and I all drove back to Brad's place in Kansas City together on Sunday afternoon. As you can see, we made a quick pitstop at MidAmerica Nazarene University (I hadn't seen the campus in like 12 years, I whined!) and after some major coercing on my part, also took some fun photos. The first one is what Matt calls our "PR group photo".
Brad then took us downtown KC to what's known as the "Plaza" for a great dinner at The Cheesecake Factory and a nice evening stroll through the fancy shopping district. It was a very fun evening, beautiful weather, and we even ran into 6 or 7 Nazarenes that we know from way back when times(of course). It was very nice to see Brad's apartment, the seminary, and places were he lives and drives every day. We are so glad we worked our schedules out to enjoy the few hours together.

Summer Break: 2006

We are finally back from all our travels during June and July. If you checked out the website mentioned below, you have already seen and heard about our Mission Trip to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. I won't bother writing more or posting pictures to this site also--it takes way too long. We did have an incredible, life changing trip, though, and I encourage you to check it out!

Matt and I also went to our first Wood Family Reunion together (my mom's side). I have been many times before, but not since I met Matt (being an "adult"), and he has never gotten to meet many of my extended family. Carrie and Brad were also both able to come, and we all had a great time seeing everyone and reminiscing... playing lots of games, frisbee golf, a picnic at the farm, even a bit of fishing. Typical Wood family fun.

This is the farm house in Kansas where my mom grew up and where we (kids) remember going for Christmas to visit family and grandma and grandpa. (Isn't it HUGE?!? It's three full floors, plus an attic and a full basement--I don't know what that makes it, technically.) I love this place though. It is even bigger and more beautiful than I remembered. The last picture is most of the crew that were able to come to the reunion--not everyone made it out to the farm that day, but most of us. We may not get to go to many more reunions, but it so good to get to see everyone again.

And now, 2 stories I can't NOT tell:

Continued recap of the past month...
#1) Sunday--Mother's Day-- we had a near-tragedy at the house... In the midst of me being sick, teacher appreciation week went on at school. That Friday I had brought home gifts the kids had given me and unthinkingly (is that a word?) set them on the coffee table out front. Well, early Sunday morning after Matt had left for early service and I was still in bed, Jackson rummaged through the bags, pulled out a box and ripped it open. He then continued to eat an entire Hershey's Kiss--no, not the quarter sized kind, the giant Valentine's day size--aluminum wrapping and all. (Yes, I do know chocolate is "poisonous" to dogs.) At first I thought there was no way he could have eaten it all, but I searched the house and didn't find ANY evidence anywhere. Payton had been in our bedroom and the pup had been all by himself out there. We checked with our vet and he (sorta freaked out, and then) said he could easily have a heart attack and may need to have his stomach pumped...we were told to keep an eye on his heart rate and call him if it got above 180. I don't know if I just can't count right, or if I was paranoid 3 times in a row, but it was definitely in the 160's and 170's for a few hours there. After monitoring him all day, his heart rate finally started to slow down and thus my heart rate as well. I truly thought I might have killed him there for a few hours. Jackson's now back to his normal self, terrorizing the rest of the family and chewing to bits every shoe, bottle, plastic bowl and whatever else accidently drops on the floor. He is also "teething", so everywhere he chews he leaves this slimy, bloody goo. Gross, I know. Just thought you'd want to know.

2.) And if THAT wasn't enough excitement...the next day something else weird/funny happened. It has been very dry and rain-less here in Florida this past month, and many brush fires have closed roads and threatened homes in our county. Finally, Monday around 5:oo p.m. it began to rain. Matt was out running errands and I was still at school in a workshop. I got back to my classroom just as it started to POUR. Then came the hail and terribly strong winds. (Winds, yes, but I don't remember having hail since we've been here in FL.) So I was stuck at school for an hour or so. I have plenty of end of the year stuff to do, so I didn't think much of it. When it finally cleared up and I headed home about an hour later, I pulled into the drive way just in time to see Matthew putting the front door of our house back into the door frame and NAILING it into the frame so it would stay up. According to him, he had arrived home a few minutes before me to find the entire front door of our house completely out of the hinges and 15 feet into our yard. The front living room was full of rain and leaves. (We've had problems with our door properly latching this past year and have discussed needing to replace it.) As much as we can figure, Payton must have been going crazy with all the hail and wind, jumped on the front door hard enough and long enough to pop it open, and then ran outside. The door then flew open and slammed against the brick, and with the 60 mph wind we had in our neighborhood, it literally lifted it right up out of the hinges and into the yard. As funny as it was to return home to find my husband nailing our door shut, I don't think I would have been laughing so hard if I were the first one to return home after a long day at work and find our living room on the porch along with the door "wide open". Luckily, Jackson is still being cage trained and was safe inside. Payton was half a block away, soaking wet and muddy (and barking at everything in sight) but not hurt. I guess we will be using our kitchen door for a few weeks while we wait on our new door to arrive. I would post a picture of our 'doorless' house, but Matt doesn't seem to (quote) "find those situations as picture worthy as I do :-)"

Since You've Been Gone...

Well, maybe YOU haven't been gone, but I feel like I have been. Matt and I have both been so busy lately that I've barely managed to make it to all my meetings and what have you, let alone enter the blogging world. Here's a recap of life for the last month or so since I wrote last...

Easter season came and went quickly. We had a beautiful sunrise service on the beach and the music/drama programs went well at church. Matthew was once again quite involved, but not me. That stuff stresses me out way too much. I just barely got over our state testing, thank you very much.

Next, Matt was very busy for 2 weeks or so preparing for District Convention. That's one of his main responsibilities as DP and it is a big headache each year because of all the work that goes into it. The youth group kids helped quite a bit this year and Matt was able to pull everything together, like always, but we didn't see much of each other for a few days there! He does a great job with district responsibilities, and I am always extra proud of him when I see him lead a big event like that. Much to my dismay, he was once again re-elected for another year, so we'll be doing this again same time-same place next spring.

Then the very next week I came down with a bad cold. It started off slowly at first, and then WhAM--it really hit me hard--and on my birthday. I think I missed a total of 3 1/2 days from school. I had already requested a personal day on Thurs. because we were supposed to go to Sea World together, but we only managed to make it to Chile's for lunch. I was sick in bed off and on for nearly a week. I finally got into a doctor last week and got on some medicine. I'm mostly better now, but still have a lot of congestion. Maybe it's allergies after all...

To be continued...

Happy Easter, ya'll

Happy Easter, everyone! Here's a cute photo of Matt and I from Easter morning--they set up a little photo spot in the breakfast room at church. I guess so everyone could take family pictures in their Sunday best. I'm not sure if I agree with the emphasis on showing off your new clothes, but anyways...the church folk seemed to love it! (Look at my handsome husband and his fuzzy little beard. He always lets his face grow grizzly for the Easter play, and I love it!)

And speaking of family, here is my kitty cat, Moseley, (4 yrs.) who until now has been terribly neglected in this blog. Yes, we still have him. I don't think this shot shows him in all of his fat-self glory, but it was already on the camera. Moseley is still adjusting to having the little pup around. He loves to sit up high where the dogs can't reach him, and whenever Jackson bothers him, he bops him on the head with his paw 4 or 5 times, real fast. It keeps me entertained.

Sister, Sister

Spring Break 2006 was perfect. Not only did I have a great time with Matt in California, but I also managed to squeeze in a trip to good ol' Nampa, Idaho during my 1 week off from school. Matt and I were in California from Saturday through Wednesday, and then Wed. afternoon we flew our separate ways for the rest of the week and weekend--he to Nashville for Trevecca TNT (Top Nazarene Talent) and I to see my girls. I spent most of my time with my adorable sister, who is now a whopping 24 years old and enjoying her 2nd year post graduation from NNU. I can't believe she's so old(!), which makes me even older and in my 5th year being away from 'Saderland. Wow. Yikes.

Carrie and I had a grand time together. She was able to take 2 days off of work just to spend with me, which I felt very special for. Nowadays we only get to see each other at holidays and maybe a few days during the year. I LOVE her little apartment and really enjoyed getting to see where she works and hang out with some of her friends. She had lots of cute stuff planned to do, like this afternoon spent at Ceramica in Boise, (see photos!) a Bunko party with a bunch of ladies from church--funny story--, OMC, working out at the Rec, etc. We also did the typical sister things, like shopping, getting our hair cut, (isn't her's cute!) eating out at our favorite restaurants--I tried Baja Fresh for the first time--thank you, Carrie, new fave. We especially had tons of fun at Ceramica--surprisingly, too, because I am NOT artistic when it comes to painting! We made stuff for each other though, and that made it a little easier because now I don't have to look at the piece of junk I made for her! I also made this nifty cereal/icecream bowl for Matthew, and I must say, I am pretty proud of how it turned out, as you can tell--here, in its pre-firing stage! Matt definitely appreciated it more than any other souvenier I could have brought him back from Idaho! Anyway, with us each painting 2 pieces, I think we were there nearly 5 hours! It was much fun, I am already looking forward to my next visit--to Ceramica, and also to Nampa. I miss the old stomping grounds more than I wish I did. Thanks for such a special trip, Care Bear!

Girl Talk and Baby Babble

It's nice to have my sister and my best friends in the same state. I got to briefly see Emily, Denise, and Kacy during my weekend to Idaho as well as my sis. Denise and I joined the Allen family for a dinner out before Em left for the weekend to Canada. I knew I would catch Em for a few hours before she left, but it was a surprise blessing to see Kevin and Colby, since they were supposed to be gone for the weekend in the opposite direction as Emily--California. Yes, I got to see them at Christmas, too, but you can never have enough friend time, especially when they have cute kids! Colby is an energetic little man now, he's walking and talking and cruising all around. And dancing of course. Any child of Emily and Kevin would have to be a dancer. Emily misses me terribly and always asks when I am moving back to Idaho.

Saturday I got to see Denise again with Kacy and her now 7 1/2 mo. old daughter Hayden. They (and R.J.) have temporarily relocated to Mountain Home for a few months as they prepare for their big move to Hawaii this summer. So it may be a while before we meet up again. Denise and I met the girls for lunch in Boise and chatted away for several hours. Hayden is so cute now and seemed very content to sit and chat with us. Even though you can't see much in this photo, Denise has a baby of her own on the way--Abbey will be here in just a matter of weeks now. So of course there was plenty of baby talk on the menu. After lunch Denise took me by the house to see their cute little nursery and of course Lenny was thrilled to see me again, as always. I totally forgot to get a better "pregnant" picture of Denise, so you'll just have to believe me that she's a cute pregnant. Denise and Lenny are due the middle of May, but we all think she'll come a bit early. Can't wait to meet little Abbey and see you all again!

These next pictures are just so cute, I couldn't resist posting them. I hope the parents don't mind!

Another Day in the City

Day 2 of our vacation to San Francisco: Enjoying the view from Alamo Square (I didn't know what Alamo Sq. was either, but recognize the houses in the background? Here's a hint: Everywhere you look (echo) there's a face, somebody who needs you...) riding the old fashion cable cars in the rain, and then a trip out to Alcatraz Island--also in the rain. We had a beautiful sunny day yesterday to walk around the town, but today turned into a typical, rainy and foggy day on the coast of Cali. It really didn't damper our plans too much, just made it a little more classic San Fran. The rain definitely set the mood for our trip out to the infamous prison. The audio tour was surprisingly interesting but we were very glad to get out of there and back into warm clothes on the mainland. Dinner and a movie wrapped up a great day 2 of vacation.

The San Francisco Treat

Today's technology is amazing. I am writing this post from our hotel room in San Francisco. Matthew and I are here in California on vacation. We have just spent the day driving and walking around this beautiful city, and are now taking a short break before heading out to dinner in China Town. So while Matt's in the shower, I'm using this little wireless computer card to share our day with the world. I don't have a clue how it works, but it's cool! And crazy!

We already love it here, and we've had a great first day. We found a really cool church to attend this morning, walked the famous Golden Gate Bridge-(not really golden, folks) and then had lunch at a cafe in this little town over the water called Saulsalito. We walked the piers, laughed at the seals, and drove the crooked street. In fact our hotel is just up the road, on Lombard St. I forgot how INCREDIBLY steep the roads are here! We love it. Here's a shot of us on the bridge this afternoon and one down on the waterfront at sunset. More photos and thoughts to come.

Animal House

Posted by Picasa We love being pet people! Here we are with our two favorite dogs, Jackson (L, male) and Peyton (R, female). Moseley (fat cat) won't come near us when we have Jackson, so he didn't make this photo shoot. I'll get him posted one of these days soon.

Dog days of summer

Look at that mug--I'm in love! I have been able to get out of school rather early each day this week, and with our beautiful Florida weather, I have had no choice but to come home and let the dogs play outside in the yard for an hour or so before dinner. It is so much fun just to eat a bowl of icecream on our porchswing and watch the dogs play as the sun sets slowly. Jackson and Peyton are so cute together, they love chasing each other around and fighting over squeaky toys. Every so often Peyton gets extra feisty and tackles Jackson into the dirt. Today I found out that Jackson likes to eat dirt--yes, actually eat it, he had it all over his tongue. The best part of it all is having a husband who comes home, notices how dirty the dogs are (for some reason), and gives them both a bath. Life is good. mjh Posted by Picasa

King of the House

If this isn't the cutest puppy you've ever seen...

Introducing Jackson, the latest and bravest of the Hawkins' household. Don't let that sweet face fool you- this dog is simply fearless, attacking any and all person, animal, pototo or plastic waterbottle that may get in his way. Matt and I are thoroughly scratched up from his enormous paws. We've had him for 5 weeks now, and in that time, he's literally doubled his weight and size, tipping the scales at around 22 lbs. And he's only 12 weeks. Our vet figures that full grown, this puts him roughly at....75-80 lbs. Yikes! We're hoping his weight tapers off soon.
I have to be honest and say that Matt and I HAVE wondered a few times --each day--what in the world did we get ourselves into?!? We adopted Peyton when she was 5, so we've never really experienced puppyhood before. Besides, this makes 3 animals living under the same roof (--we have no fenced yard! ) Jackson really has been loads of entertainment though. The dogs seem to be doing rather well--Jack takes on Peyton all the time, and they have become quite the pals...well, let's just say Peyton puts up with him most of the time. But the puppy wants to play ALL the time... He sees the cat as a live toy to chase. A day or two ago, on his way to go potty, Jack accidentally tackled Moseley (the cat), pinning him to the ground for a brief moment before he realized what he was doing. Then the next min. he went on his way. Now Moseley is a good 15-17 lbs. himself, but I've NEVER seen my cat look so terrified in his life. More stories to come, for sure.
